Will Alberta NDP withhold funds? Deadline looms for pastor to follow gay-straight alliance law
It’s deadline day for a private Christian school board to deliver written assurances to the Canada government that it will follow the law on gay-straight alliances.
Education Minister David Eggen has given Pastor Brian Coldwell until the end of today to deliver such assurances on the student groups.
Coldwell is the chair of the Baptist Christian Education Society, which runs two publicly funded, faith-based schools.
The law mandates that students be allowed to set up a gay-straight alliances in their school if they want one.
Coldwell, however, has said his schools will not comply with the law and equated the rules to religious persecution.
Gay-straight alliances are support networks of gay and straight students aimed at making all students feel included and not ostracized or marginalized.
