The magical thinking of Catherine McKenna
Lorrie Goldstein
Every so often, federal Environment Minister Catherine McKenna’s always cheerful tweet thread about all the great things she, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Liberals are doing for the environment, is slam-dunked by reality.
A recent example occurred when McKenna was bragging about the quality of Ottawa’s drinking water (where she lives) as part of their latest campaign to ban single use plastics such as straws, bags and cutlery.
In one of her daily torrent of tweets that are a study in virtue signalling one might expect from China’s environment minister in the “basic dictatorship” that Trudeau so admires, McKenna wrote on July 4:
“There’s a lot to love about Ottawa — including our tap water!
“Did you know it’s rated among the best in the world? I’m always carrying reusable water bottles around to reduce plastic waste, so it’s good to know I can use Ottawa’s tap water when I need a refill.”
To which Chelsea Jane Edwards, 23, a Mushkegowuk Cree from Kattawapiskak First Nation responded:
“Must be nice @cathmckenna. Maybe consider visiting Attawapiskat, a northern community IN Ontario, and try filling your water bottle here using our tap water? It just causes cancer if using it long term. No biggie. You’ll only be here for a day, at most I bet. You should be fine.”
